TWUMC Awarded a $400 Grant from the Catapult Conference

From the UMC Mobile District Office Today's News – January 13, 2011:

Tanner Williams United Methodist Church, Tanner Williams (Pastor Ray C. Lane, Jr.)

This congregation has inspired many in their expansive outreach to their community, especially to the local elementary school. Because of the sheer magnitude of their efforts, the congregation was limited in its ability to respond when the school requested coats and gloves for their neediest children. The small Catapult grant will assist Tanner Williams UMC in meeting some of these needs.

Opportunities for Service

Reading Buddies

Tanner Williams Elementary School (TWES) needs Reading Buddies to listen to children read. If you can spare about 30 minutes each week, you could help a child succeed. Some children need practice reading, some need help staying focused, and all children need encouragement. According to Mary Ann Napper with Mobile Area Education Foundation, children who do not succeed at reading by grade three will not be ready for the "read to learn" program in grade four and will be much more likely to drop out of high school later. This is a rewarding experience for the volunteer and can improve our graduation rate.

A training class is available but not required. See Peggy Allen or call 251-471-6010 for more information

PTA

Would you like to support your local PTA? Make checks for $5 per person, payable to TWES PTA, and give the checks to Peggy Allen. Applications are on the table in the narthex.

A Fund Raiser Where Everybody Wins

The West Wilmer United Methodist Church needs help to fund its community ministries.  Please help them by letting them pick up your metal at your church or at your home.

What will they pick up?  All metal, (tin, copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, iron, steel.) Examples?  Old--working or not--refrigerators, stoves, car batteries, all appliances, old cars, motors (of all kinds,) metal chairs, air conditioners, bicycles, pumps, tractors, metal lockers, filing cabinets, pots, pans, metal racks, tin roofing, siding, aluminum siding.

They will clean out your storage rooms at church and at your home.

IT IS A GOOD AND PROFITABLE THING TO RECYCLE. Other items they would love to have:  Lawn mower batteries, outside air conditioning units, pipes of all kinds, barbecue grills, gutters, etc. IF IN DOUBT THEY WILL TAKE IT.

Please call today: 251-391-8724 or 251-786-2941

Country Cookin' II

Have you ever wished for the recipe for Barbara's salad, Emma's cake or Lynda's corn casserole? After every potluck, we ask for recipes from the wonderful cooks at TWUMC.

The solution is to make a new cookbook! Help us by contributing your favorite recipes and the mission committee will make it happen. Remember us during the holidays and make copies of your family favorites.

Profits from the cookbook sales will help finance our missional goals. Thank you for all the ways that you make our outreach so successful.

Boxtops for Education and Campbell's Soup Labels

Please remember to save Boxtops for Education and Campbell's Soup labels for TWES. The boxtops will be used to pay for field trips to reward good grades, and the labels will help provide books for the library.

Mission of Hope

A reminder—there's a drum in the church kitchen area for donations to the Mission of Hope. A list of their needs is taped to it, and another list is on the bulletin board in the office entrance hall.

McKemie Place

McKemie Place is an overnight shelter for homeless women. On Tuesday, December 28th, we are scheduled to provide a meal to the ladies who spend the night there.

The ladies appreciate donations of used clothing suitable for a job interview or doctor's appointment. They need toiletries, paper products, and hygiene products, as well as 22" suitcases (wheels are helpful) for storing their clothes.

Call Peggy Allen or a member of the missions committee for more information.
